Default Is it possible to fix the BLOWN tweeters?

Hi there,

I have blown a pair of KEF T 127 8 ohm 1 " tweeters,Is there any way I would be able to fix it, and if I do or get another pair . How can I prevent it from blowing off again.

the kid at home had the volume all the way up and trying to figure out as to why there was no sound, when he finally figured out the the A and B speaker switches were not selected, and when he did with the high volume. That was the end of the tweeters.

Can anyone help me out on this please, its my fav speaker.

thanx,

Tony

I'm afraid there is no fix for your tweeters. You'll have to replace them.

As for protecting new ones. Break the kid's fingers if he gets near the volume control again.(just kidding) I have seen some posts about protection circuits, but can't recall just where.

Later BZ

Tony,

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I am also sorry I can't help much with the fixing of the tweeters. While the diaphragm is replaceable, I am not sure where you would find replacements. There is nothing on KEFs Web site. This tweeter had a habit of failing because of the voice coil leads breaking where they cross the suspension. If this is the case, then by carefully prying up the diaphram and very carefully bridging the break will bring them back to life. If you are not super careful, however, you might change the performance of the driver. If the voice coils are overheated, then diaphragm replacement (or tweeter replacement) is your only option.

As for future failures, there are several techniques to protect tweeters, but all have audible consequences. The options range from fuses to specially design circuit breakers and thermistors.

You will have to decide what you are willing to give up in performance, what you are willing to risk, and what parts are easily available to you.

Parts Express offers both circuit breakers and "Polyswitches" for sale. I am sure that most of the driver merchants will have similar products.

Best Wishes,

Mark

i second the breaking finger approach. however, a more civilized approach would be a high voltage electrocution circuit. nothing like good old classical conditioning.

Take one apart and see if it's a burnt voice coil or a break in the wire. A break may be salvageable.

If You need help (translation, questions to the seller or maybe even getting/shipping them eventually) let me know. Surface mail shipping (about 6 weeks) to Canada is Euro 12,30.

Hi Tony,

for the translation:
The seller says this pair of KEF T27`s is as new.
One of the tweeters is never used the other is mounted in a test enclosure (which can be seen at the pictures) and ran only a few hours.
They were included in a Rogers LS 3/5 kit which has never been finished.
For both tweeters there is the original package (and accessories as an installation template, sealing rubber rings and srews ).
BTW: although the picture shows the enclosure and an original box of KEF B110`s this auction is for the pair KEF T27 tweeters only.
The auction ends 10.31. (14:17 european time) - approximately 7 days from now.

another note: the seller stated to ship to Germany and Europe only. So if You intend to bid, better ask him if he is willing to ship to Canada as well.

hope this is of any help
