Default Driver selection advice

I am looking to build a 2.1 set of active monitors and an active sub, with an Apple Airplay device as a source.

I listen to compressed, over eq'ed and over produced popular music, 80's stadium rock - journey etc and the odd bit of Einaudi. Don't hate me.

I'm looking to use the Hypex AS2.100 plate amps.

I need help on driver choice, I'm thinking treble, 5" mid/bass and then a sub - which I have no idea about.

I'm only an enthusiastic amateur, so happy to be told the whole idea is wrong / there is a better answer.

I'm not overly fussed on budget, I'm comfortable with say £500-750 on drivers. But if there as twice as good for £100 more, I'd pay it.

Thanks in advance!

Ben

There are lots of possibilities with that budget. You cannot go wrong with:
- Seas Prestige
- SB Acoustics

Both brands are easy to find online (e.g. Europe Audio).

I would suggest the following:
Seas
- 5" Mid H1488-08 L16RNX
- Tweeter H1499-06 27TBCD/GB-DXT

SB Acoustics
- 5" Mid: SB15NRXC30-8
- Tweeter: SB29RDNC-C000-4

There are many more combinations, using the plate amps should result in a nice compact setup.

What is you listening situation/ room? I'd only go for a 2.1 system if you're at a computer desk or space is severely limited. A pair of good 3 ways with decent woofers would suit the music you like much better, and there are plenty of designs out there you can copy - check out Troels' site DIY Loudspeaker Projects Troels Gravesen
(& you can still bi-amp for excellent results)

Thank you for your advice.

What are Morel like? Specifically EW428 and ET 448?

Also Scan-speak seem high end (read:expensive), does this mean they are fantastic?

Thanks, Ben

the scans look good. Ive never used them though. The high price and low Qts puts me off them. Plenty have used them and sing their praises.

Hi,

This Zaph|Audio - ZD5 - Scan Speak 15W8530K00 and Vifa XT25
is probably the best 5" 2 way design out there and its not cheap. If your
not a volume freak the floorstander basically doesn't need a subwoofer.

In the UK, with drivers from Europe Audio - Home page
probably best bang for buck design you could build is :
https://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/diy/amiga
Again a sub is not really needed.

For a sub take a look at :

Hi,

Looking at your amplifier choice its £400 for 2 channels.
Go that way if you want to.

I'd go for something like this and passive x/o speakers :

Click the image to open in full size.

http://www.richersounds.com/product/...ara-pm5004-blk

PM5003 vs PM5004 | Stereophile.com
Marantz PM5003 integrated amplifier | Stereophile.com

You really can't go wrong for £150.

rgds, sreten.
