It isn't arbitrary. The basic reason assymetrical filters are used is because drivers aren't flat. The assymetrical filters are producing symmetrical slopes. Departing from this will be OK if you know what you're doing.

Allen, I understand. For some reason I was under the impression you "shouldn't mix" within the same XO point. When I say I will do it, in reality I'd like to model it and see the effect.
