Question DIY Monitor Speaker

I'm looking for a small monitor speaker ( tweeter, 6,5" woofer) the total cost including drivers, crossover and box should not exceed $700..

(This is going to be my first speaker project so I want the speaker to be easy to build)

Any suggestions??

Speaker is never easy to build, better build a decent one righ away. Check out Tony Gee's desings. DD8 might be the one for you..

mhelin,

I've been looking at Tony Gee's designs. The Mezzo Proteus looks interesting. I know it ain't easy to build speakers, but I would like to give it a try anyway

BUT, they all seem to use series filters and NOT parallell filters. Not sure if that is to everybody's liking...

Why not try HFLS-1 from:

Give me a week and mine are playing...

UrSv,

Yes, the HFLS-1 speaker is an alternative. It's quite cheap and easy to build.

Keep me reported regarding the sound quality of the speakers when yours are playing!!

In my experience it's easier to succeed with the series filter and the results are better than with parallel filters, though they are harder to grasp for beginners. Benefit is that because the hp and lp sections are connected it's almost impossible to go wrong with the design if you are careful with the calculation of the component values (changing for an example the value for the L in 1.st order filter adjusts the crossover point for both drivers, not just for the woofer like in parallel filter). If you take a design like Mezzo Proteus of DD8 and just build it there will be no problems, if you have to change a driver (let's say the tweeter) you will see that only thing you got to do is to pick an element of similar FS and impedance response and just adjust the level with lpad. Also I think that the phase linearity of serial filter is better.
