Hello Ajju,
Good to hear from you and thank you for filling me in in the JBL40s. I just picked up another pair the other day because I was afraid I will not find anymore. There is actually one more set at the shop but the whizzer on one driver was a bit bent up. Does removing the whizzer decrease the HF any? Also, how are you performing this operation without it looking like a hack job?

Indeed, I would like to know the URL or email of the speaker supplier you mention (Corson? I will try a web search also). What are the Indian Peerless drivers like, quality wise? and how do I contact them? Sorry for asking so many questions but I have been running into brick walls with this info. Is there any similarities to the European Peerless firm?

At this moment I am facinated by the concept of small single driver, no crossover designs, so I am really after 4 or 5 inch full range speakers. The JBL40 were a lucky find (There are also 6" versions available here also, but have not purchaced them....yet).

I just finished spec-ing out a twqt-folded voight cabinet tuned to 90 hz and am having a carpenter cut and assemble the MDF. I will do the electronic work myself.
Fine tuning with stuffing will have to be a complete ear job since I have no testing equipment (or experience using it). If you have any suggestions on this task, please let me know.

Thank you for your help and advice.

Cheers, Stuart

Default Here are some URL's.

Hi Stuart,
You can try www.corrson.com and www.peerlessaudio.com
There is another manufacturer at Mumbai called Iwai .
Their web site is www.iwaispeakers.com

Let us know what response you get from them.
Cheers,
Ashok.

actually indian drivers are not that bad. what i find is that the published specs are in consistent with the real specs and the availability is erratic. Corrson also sells Vifa's TC line.

Hello fellow compatriots.
i know first hand the difficulty we go thru in procuring good drivers. i may have a solution for those who are interested....i will give details soon as i receive my own drivers. i should get my hands on them by the 17th of this month....the procurement route that i will be suggesting will probably be helpful most to indian group buys and for those who buy in large quantities...
please bear with me till the 17th after which i will divulge details as to how we indians can buy drivers and parts(virtually anything offered by partsexpress, madisound, speakercity).
FYI, i have bought a pair each of Dayton 10" Classic, Vifa D27tg-35 tweeters and Vifa Midranges(TC line).
Cheers,
Sachi

Default A rough evaluation..........

Corrson.
Retailer selling Vifa and the more expensive Scan Speak drivers imported from Europe. Can't go wrong with buying these .

Iwai.
Indian manufacturer from Mumbai catering to the export market and now interested in selling locally also. Torvin in Chennai is their first reseller. www.torvin.com
Products have published specifications and build finish is decent . I didn't look at it too closely but it is probably quite good. Their marketing man was very friendly at the AV Expo where I saw the drivers. They had good pricing.

Peerless-India.
Manufacturer catering to export markets. Published specs for drivers found in the Indian market are hard to find. What ever I got didn't match the driver. Performance is average. Certainly not Vifa class. Not very cheap for what you get. Very unfriendly towards Indian DIY people . Navin knows more about that !
Hopefully they have new people interfacing with the Indian market . I have just emailed them asking for price and details about their 15 inch driver. If I get a reply it mean they have changed and that I think is very essential. So lets all hope they will reply.

Meantime contact Iwai ( and Torvin) and Corrson.
Cheers.

The driver as such has a very low HF response...
I like it predominantly for its bass and mid.. You would come to know about it once you finish ur TQWT.
removing the whizzer is rather easy..just pull it off and it should come off...!! You may leave the whizzer in its place and give it a shot...
If you find any rattling think of getting rid of the whizzer.. The whizzer as such is not designed to rattle...but because of the "excellent" handling of these fragile materials it does get deformed or bent...thats whn it starts creating a problem...!!!

Though the response in HF is bad you may get it up by electronic means...Dont consider it to be bad design. There is nothing wrong with it as long as you dont overdo the equalisation.
