In that case I will wire 2 woofers in series. The woofers that i have currently are 4ohms each. But the data sheet claims that it can drive 4ohms but then why to take that chance!

One more thing that I noticed was stk 4192 circuit diagram shown in the apllication notes deosnt have gain control. So do I need to connect a pot by removing the gain controlling resistor from the circuit.

Hello,
I am also in India (New Delhi) and am starting some enclosure projects. I found the synthetic pillow stuffing for Rs.70 per Kg but unsure of its effectiveness yet. I will soon find out about the Nuwood/MDC available here. I have even found a good supplier of higher quality connectors (metal springloaded terninals, ect.) in the Chandi Chawk electronics market accross from the Red Fort (store No. 167). What I cannot find is an importer (or Indian manufacturer) of good quality full range drivers. I found some gray market JBLs (called JBL40 and JBL60) in 4" and 6" versions. They are a decent looking dual cone (whizzer type) things, but I cannot find this model, and tech info anywhere on the web. THis makes me think they might be knock offs. But they seem to be of a very high standard for knock offs. Has anyone else seen these drivers, or know where I can get more info on them? Also, where to get Fostex, Peerless, Focus, Jordan, Axon (distributed by Orca and appearently made in India?!?), or even radio shack FR drivers? Thanks for your replies. Regards, Stuart |

Hi,
I just found the posting from Ajju from a while back (the search engine did not find it for me...oh well. My appologies for repeating) I am attempting to design a single driver TWQT or back loaded horn using this JBL40. The question I still have for Ajju (if you are reading) is how did you get your Fs of 90 hz. The very limited info on my packaging suggests a freq range of 160-16k. In using the Rutter TQWT calculation spreadsheet, should I use the Fs of 90? Thanks for your reply Stuart |

My appologies Stuart, had been real busy for a while..though I know that is not an excuse as far as DIY audio is concerned..
)yes...the JBL 40's are car speakers...they have phased out that model and I think have replaced them with a twin driver one..I had also done a search on the net and all I could find was a japanese or taiwanese page which had everything except the words JBL 40 in an alien language...Since all my alien friends were out of town that dint help much. ![]() As far as I see it they are extremely capable on bass, for such a small driver(and for the money u pay). I've used them in a small TL and also in a bass reflex which I continue to use, even today. These drivers are well made, can handle quite some power, has got big dia Voice coils and AL films on the voice coil for better power handling and a pruned response. However I must admit that, though the base and mids tend to be good, they lack on the HF front. The whizzer is best removed as otherwise it has a tendency to rattle... I had measured the specs of these drivers using WinISD. Thats how I arrived at a figure of 90Hz fs. I'm using them currently in a reflex enclosure, of around 4-5 litres and tuned to around 70-80 Hz. I dint do much calculations, except kept on measuring the response and tuned it until I got the charecterestic curve. Since the speakers are loaded on to a cylindrical enclosure, the Fs will actually drop a bit from measured, due to mass loading(which was also observed). I've put a small 20W RMS amp as well inside this enclosure. I like the rolled of sound, especially to listen to in the night. So thats it about my adventures of a third kind with JBL40. Btw, If you are really keen on other drivers, u can source them from corson, or the Indian-peerless available in Bombay. Since all our DIY friends have gone into hybernation. I've not heard form them regarding their experiments with these peerless units. Corrson is in bangalore and ships all over India. He could give you vifas and Scanspeaks. If you would be interested, I can track him down. He alse has a website on which u can place orders. Many thanks ajju. |
