Default Kord Vulcan - BM220 / D2008

A new project-

I previously had a pair of Kord Tornado speakers here-
Volt BM220DS + D2905/9300 - Kord Tornado
With a Volt BM220DS/D2008 tweeter (and D2905/9300 upgrade).

I managed to find a pair of just as rare Kord Vulcan speakers.

These appear to have the same drivers, with a slightly different crossover.

When I first got them-

The Veneer was peeling off, so thats the first bit.

Stripped-

Veneer started-

Using Iron on Real Wood Veneer, with solid 3mm Walnut strips and 3mm Cork for the baffles.

The main difference is the BM220'DS' in the Tornado had a coated plastic cone, where as the BM220'DS' in these has a uncoated paper cone.
Any idea if this is a re-cone, as they should be from the same era (Circa 1981)

Tornado Crossover-
C1 = 2.2uf
L1/L2 = not marked
C2 = 4.4uF
R = 2.2 Ohms

Vulcan Crossover-
C1 = 4.7uf
L1/L2 = not marked
C2 = 10.0uF
R = 2.2 Ohms

Quite a big difference between the two. Looking at pics of the Tornado, the Coils look the same size on the Vulcan, relative to each other and the other components.

I think I just bought these speaker on ebay possibly from the guy you sold them to! You noted something in your post that I think I can explain.

You mention that the bass driver is a paper cone affair rather than the plastic cone on the Tornados. That is because it is not the BM220DS that you list in the post. If you check your own photo, it is actually a B220DS. This was a pulp paper cone derivative of the volt 8" design intended for use in P.A. applications (most recent and near identical version is called the BM220.1).

Apparently, your man at Kord had a listen to it and preferred it to the BM220DS in the Vulcan. It's near identical to the BM220DS except that the paper cone cause the freq response to become a bit lumpy after 2KHz. Apparently though, this did not bother the designer and he opted to use it anyway.

Either way, looking forward to taking delivery of them and trying them out for myself.

Cheers,

iep

Sorry, just spotted that the photo I referenced is not in this post. I actually saw it in another forum with duplicates of the photos you show here. The photo I mean is this one where you can see the model number as B220DS:

Cheers,
