Hi Roddyama
In one of your previous posts I remember seeing a Pic of a Nakamichi 2 way active crossover. I happen to own one of those and was wondering whether you think the sound quality of the unit is any good? Would you use it with a pair of speaker that you where developing or would newer DIY xovers kill the Nak. sonicly? If anyone else has these your comments are most welcome. |

Hi Mesh,
I am of the opinion that there can be more critical detractors from the overall sound of the system than the "sound" of an individual piece of electronics. I know this is a bit evasive, let me explain. The Nak xover is 12db /oct on the hi-pass and lo-pass (butterworth). Your speakers need to work with this type of crossover configuration. I cross from my mid bass to the mid horns at ~1200Hz. This has always (from the 80's) work well for me. I'm sure the Nak adds some character to the overall sound, but It's the best sounding xover I've used in this position. I'm not goiing to be one who will be able to tell you exactly which component or combination of components are adding a particular character to the sound. I like the way my system sounds using the Nak xovers. The overall sound is smooth and detailed. The sound stage is dimensional and solid. I would say that the Naks are very good crossovers. I sure they can be improved upon, but not for less then the original selling price of the Naks.

Hi Rodd,
The info i was looking for you have answered - i just wanted to make shure that they were not crap! - Everything you say does not suggest that. I got them from a mate of mine who had them sitting in box for the last 16 years.... you cant bet free ( permanent loan..). I dont think there are many of these out there. Do you know of any others ? Please keep an eye out for the speakers which I am building. 4 foot vintage ribbons etc.... which will be active xovered. BTW thanks for helping me earlier |

Mesh,
Do you know that each of the Nak Black Box series components runs on a separate AC powered 12VDC power supply. You will need this unit as well.

Ive got the Nak Power supply. I found these units secondhand 17 years ago, I rang my mate who purchased them. |
