Default Fullrange with 10 inch woofer?

Is it possible to make a good speaker with a 10 inch woofer combined with a full range unit? The goal is to reach 20Hz with that woofer and avoiding a 3-way using a full range unit on top. It will hopefully make the crossover easier, only one crossing point needed.

That's essentially a FAST system, it's been done quite a few times.

Yes there are many similar systems but...

...do you really need 20Hz?

Find the FR yourself. There are many available including the experiences with "Das Viech" with the Beyma 8AG/N full range driver of bubuxxl@diyAudio
Visaton Stella - any thoughts?
Strassacker: Speaker - kits - do it yourself

Then you only need a good woofer to go to 19/20 Hz with a 90/100 Liters enclosure for that purpose, no problem. Also look at what is your objective in terms of SPL of the FR.

Another thread on the subject -- it will lead you to 3 more eventually.

A thread for Tysen and variations on FAST

I'm currently listening to such a system. EL70eN + 2 x EL166 per side.

I'm not the expert, but my only concern would be when I read the following:
Quote:
"The only negative aspect i've found is that an underhung fullrange driver has usually an even smaller voicecoil than a typical 1" dome has, and no ferrofluid to cool it. So you get thermal compression problems pretty early on, especially combined with low efficiency."

I'm still debating whether I should add woofers to a pair of full rangers I have.
