Some of you designers should market your creations

Hi Andy,
Well said, Many people are simply unthinking and very naive. I am sure they would not give their own hard work away for free.
DIY does have a tendency to attract those people who always want something for nothing, because they believe they are being ripped off. This attitude probably extends into every element of these peoples lives.

Without the traditional Hi-Fi market investing in Driver manufacturers the DIY market will be up the creek without a paddle, to put it mildly. For sure no major drive unit manufacturers relies on the specialist DIY market to keep them going!

Linkwitz acknowledges the cost of doing business:
DIY and the Cost of Doing Business

It seems as I have an attitude problem...

But still - DIY for me is to share knowledge of very good products found and share the knowledge for everyone to enjoy and better. The meaning of this in the posts above seems to mean that the posts is more an appetizer of what a wannabe company might produce IF interest is out here - and sell.

But then again - I had no clue of that the loudspeaker thread was a commercial one.

Sorry for the interupt - keep it going.

Especially for you SpinMonster - I'm really sorry that this thread got totally out of boundaries but keep up the good work.

I posted here to pay a comliment to those who have built and shared designs, crossovers, and shared testing. You took on the position somehow that I was bragging about my work (I wasnt) while I was saying thank you to those who shared their work helping my recent work eclipse my prior best. I posted a test on a $18K speaker that mated a 12" woofer with a ring radiator tweeter to show how rediculous the high end market is when you compare it with the results of a budget ZAPH speaker and I'm treated with sarcasm.

I'm not sure what I did to get the attack and I definitely took your posts that way. I'm sure you are really good at what you do (far better than I if you went to school for it). I'm sorry if my post offended you in some way. I wasnt bragging but rather saying thank you to those who helped me.

Sorry, yes very sorry indeed to what seemed to be an attack on you personally. That was not my intent! The answers in the thread gave me all knowledge I need. Sorry again Spinmonster... Keep up the good work and don't give your findings to the dragons! They will absolutely without a blink steal your ideas and sell them as their own - due to small pay in the indusrty (now how ever else could I understand the whinining in the previous posts?).

Now, make sure that everyone understands that this
is your design that everyone acknowledges. This is the crucial point. After this it is quite lost for the dragons - the more you show up on your ideas the better it is - the more popular it gets there may be another industry popping up.
The dragons will then have a few ways to go - bettering their offers or offering better ones.

Now, again if you don't understand what I wrote I can't see it in any other way that you are out fishing to find out what the DIY market would prefer. Now - if that would be the truth - does that make me bad?

Doesn't diyaudio serve as a meeting place for rookies and some of the greats. It amazes me that I have been mixing with Lynn Olson, John Kreskovsky and Jack Caldwell in threads! :D

So many different approaches to good sound. But these people are deep thinkers, and it is a pleasure to learn from them. It's like speaker university.

They've got me reading Steen Duelund at the moment. He has a way of thinking outside the box, and since I like to share, it all seems to lead to Fourth order Linkwitz-Riley filters and wide bandwidth drivers with smooth slopes.

I do it because I love it. Like the old Greek mathematicians. Hope you do too.

DIY is a force for greater good certainly.
This is a golden age for DIY, global communication between users and expert designers, far better drivers, far more variety, great software, active crossovers, experts sharing with novices, B.S and snake oil is exposed, fantastic!

Also I think DIY can influence commercial design, if not to the same extent as the other way around.

Bring on the exposé, bad designs deserve derision, sort the wheat from the chaff. Remember the Hi-Fi industry is small, the ultra high end vastly smaller, some of these absurd designs with high price tags probably sell in single numbers. Find them in the classified ads some years later and you could well get the actual pair the magazine heard.

Weird and not so wonderful silly price tag designs actually get put into production and reviewed in mag's, but in what numbers? is this proof that the high end is simply pure snake oil? of course not, this is also misrepresentation.

Another thing a lot of us like doing is getting folks to upgrade ropey old speakers. It's not hard.

I once found a pair of nice vented voicecoil 8" bass units new in a junk shop for £30. No idea what they were really. Imagine my glee when I then found a pair of empty stripped Wharfedale Linton cabinets in the street. :D

Thankyou God, I thought. I bought a two way Maplin crossover and a pair of tweeters and lashed it up with a DIY reflex tube under the bass. I really had NO IDEA what I was doing. But after a few tweaks, those were as good a pair of speakers as I have ever heard!

Hey, who upset SpinMonster? He's edited his opening post. Bad business.

I am amazed how confrontational/sensitive some people get round here. I thought we hung around here for FUN. Anyway, I have a new driver to look at, thanks to SM. Good man.

Shall we continue to share groovy ideas. Here's one I liked. This diagram of mine shows how amplifiers are really all the same. Mosfet, Transistor, Valves.

...All the same. Now tell ME something interesting. :)

:cop: The recent ability to edit your first post in a thread is not to be taken lightly. It is meant for updating the first post to point to new material in the thread. It is NOT for wholesale changes to the post. Do not use it in that manner.

I appologize for posting intro material here about myself to say Hi. Apparently it was taken as a brag and not the compliment to the few who contribute to help others. I wont do it again.

Spin, dont accommodate anyone but yourself. We can handle it. If you really want to get a chewing out...post somewhere where Zen Mod can reply. LOL...maybe he'll read this.

There are so many great designs available on this forum.

This doesn't pertain to speaker kits, however, I thought I would try my hand at providing a complete tube amp kit. I had custom transformers and chassis made for 25 kits, as well as purchasing all of the ancillary components. It is a great amp, but the quality of components forces the price point too high for most folks. Especially when you can buy a fancy shiny Chinese amp for $300 bucks or so. But then you spend more fixing it and arrive at basically the same cost as if you had purchased quality in the first place.

I ran into the same problem when I owned a security systems company. You bid a job with quality, your undercut by less than quality, and then they call you to fix the problems caused by the low bid. So in the end, I quit.

I did also design a loudspeaker to match the tube amp kit. High quality drivers, perfect crossover, etc., but then again the price point keeps it from being viable unless you can sell a great quantity.

I've resigned myself to building amps/speakers now just for my own satisfaction and enjoyment, and if someone actually listens, hears, and experiences the system and likes it, then I'm glad to help.

Tough times out there.

There is a thought worrying me about the SB Acoustics mineral filled polycones. It's that the low inductance is done with an short underhung voice coil. That means that small excursions take it into non-linearity. It limits at 11mm overall excursion, or 5.5mm one way. Don't know. :(

For all that, my newly conceived matched filter may keep it linear. It relies on using the (lowish) woofer inductance Le in the last leg of the filter at a very defined matching crossover frequency, and I hope the other leg, which mirrors it by including a model of the speaker, will keep things reasonably linear.

I don't know why no-one else thinks much of it.

I thought I apologized for that already.

But I wasn't referring to YOU! You behaved OK. ;)

But lets let bygones be bygones. I often notice Americans don't really get the European sense of humour. Turbon was really quite funny, IMO. Karl Marx, isn't it? :D

He was.

You have it all wrong, I appologized.

As far as humor, it sure is fun once you're on the home team.

Hey come on SM share some of your info with us.....haha.

I must have come off as the village idiot to get hawked so fast. Oops! Its OK, its the internet and it wouldnt have happened were it not for the annonymity of a keyboard.

I wasn't feeling the love but I'm on board now. Beat me up virtually. Back to underhung VC's!

SpinMonster... YOU have nothing to appologize for - I behaved as a jerk. Now I am still sorry for that but the harm seems to be done. Now how do we get past this traumatizing event.

Now, c'mon - share your ideas.

Could an administrator please remove my postings from this thread.
