No. You're going to loose your bass and get a multi-lobed polar mess at high frequencies where the timbre won't sound natural.

Martin has several papers on OB design and performance.

As many here already know, Martin also has MathCAD worksheets for modeling a wide variety of speakers.

Hi,

It is possible with a large speaker in a large cabinet that taking the back
off will sound OK, but this presumes the box is a boom box in the first
place, fitted with a high Qts driver with a very prominent upper bass peak.

A well designed box and driver simply won't work with the back off, no bass.

Sreten. The speakers in question are PA speakers that could be said to be a bit "boom boxy" 15" bass, mid-range horn and 5 bullet tweeters. The whole cabinet is un-damped and there is a large diameter, but fairly shot port on the rear. I have to say that they are not all that bad having used them in my main system
