I can't comment on the crossover mods other than to say use inductors wound with pure silver wire.
In my experience, the type of damping material in a ported design does not make much difference. Use what you can get hold of easily but I would suggest using a double thickness immediately behind each driver to minimise reflections back through the speaker cones. I cut it so that it stays in place through friction.
