Harmonic distortion may be different. Not sure which one would be better in that respect, though. I don't think that this would lead to audible differences. You're better off comparing the frequency reponse of both and picking the smoothest option. I'd probably go for the cheaper option.

IMO there are only a few cases were "going neo" makes sense.
1. Super drivers! There are a handful of woofer type drivers on the market, that are "nutty" as far as their capabilities are concerned. They take advantage of very strong motor structure designs from neo magnets to accomplish more work for less power than many competing options with Fe drivers. The problem is that they tend to be remarkably expensive. If space/weight is an issue at no cost limits, these are the way to go! 2. Weight! From a portability and ruggedness standpoint, a lighter neo magnet assembly reduces stresses on the horn and structure that the horn is mounted to when in transit. The lower weight of Neo motor structures, often combined with low weight composite or cast aluminum frames, can significantly reduce the weight of a total speaker system, which in turn, reduces the number of back injuries and medical claims For permanent installations where space/weight is not a serious issue, I wouldn't spend an extra penny on a Neo driver personally. |
