As an extension of the "Stupid Cheap Line Array" thread, I'm curious what horn fans think about this. I've been considering horn loading an array of 64 Apex Jr. tweeters and horn loading them (more like waveguide). I'm not interested in increased sensitivity as much as I'm interested in smoothing response. I am, however, hoping that it would be possible to gain efficiency on the 10k+ region in order to reduce the required in-room reflection that is the only hope to balance out the combing effect on individual drivers. Any recommendation on horn shape/design?
FYI, I'm going to array these next to a line of 3" Aurasounds (the cheap 16ohm guys). The 5.25" Aura woofer will be in a separate cabinet for placement testing purposes. Thanks, Greg |

I experimented in 2005 with 90 degree waveguides on small tweeters.
The waveguide does little to increase efficiency on the 10k+ region because the piston diameter is already causing the tweeters to be more narrow than the waveguide. The test results are below. The reason nearly all pro line arrays use compression driver horns with very narrow vertical dispersion rather than tweeter lines is obvious. If you don't want to go that route, ribbon tweeters would be a better choice for a line array than dome tweeters, as their narrow HF vertical response causes far less comb filtering. |
