Default Sony DIY floorstanders

Hi, I'm a noob to this, I currently have a set of Sony ss-mb250h up front in my HC setup and I've just seen a set of Sony Ss- b2ed speakers up for sale locally, now my question is.... Is it possible to build a set of floorstanders using the tweeter and 13cm mid/bass Driver with freq range 60hz. - 70 kHz from the ss-b2ed and the the 16.5cm bass driver freq range 60hz - 50khz from the ss-mb250h ??? I really am new to this can I just hook up the bass driver to the b2ed setup?? Do I need anything else?? Is this possible?? Sorry for all the questions :-) the cabinets aren't a prob as I'm a cabinet maker by trade, hopefully some of you guys can help.

Thanks

As a new member I would advise you to build a 3-way from a kit, as the diy projects are usually from known drivers with specs either measured by the client or in printed-form by the manufacturer. It is possible to do what you say if the drivers match, but, it takes a lot off trouble and crossovers will change according (2-Way for a 3-Way). Better doing a new speaker. What is another talk, and yes you can play with them as an experience/test but don't expect more.

When you say drivers have to match do you mean build or frequency? Both drivers are Kevlar, thanks for the reply:-)

So you want the midrange to be covered by the smaller driver and the bass by the larger? It can be done, but the potential improvement might be offset by the potential problems this creates. Are you looking for higher volume or more extended bass? There may be other ways to make this worthwhile.

Hi

What you are proposing is possible, but probably not worth it. There are three ways that you could do this.

(1) Buy a ready made generic 3 way crossovers, and build some nice new cabinets for the three drivers (keep the mid and bass seperate), and cross your fingers.

(2) Measure your drivers and design your own three-way crossover, and build a cabinet according to your measurements and research. This is an extremely difficult and skilled process.

(3) Buy a pair of cheap subwoofer amplifiers that have high level inputs and outputs. Build a nice cabinet of your own design. Keep your existing speaker's (Sony ss-mb250h) crossover and dimensions in the design, but add a bass driver below (again seperated). The amplified signal from your hifi will go into the subwoofer amp which powers the bass driver, and then out of the subwoofer amp into the crossover of the Sony ss-mb250h and its two drivers. The subwoofer amp will automatically cut off the low frequencies to the Sony speakers. This is called a sub-satelite set up. It should allow your system to go louder, and the Sony speakers will sound better as they do not have to do any bass work. This would work just as well if you leave your sony speakers intact, but it may be fun to build new cabinets of your own design.

Good luck
