I recently built a pair of little monitor 2-way speaker using the mid/woofer
Vifa P13WH-00-08 and Scanspeak D2905-950000 tweeter in a 5 litre LS3/5A enclosure which I ported. I like the sound but feel the bass is lacking even when compared to a pair of LS3/5a speakers. I was looking at the Scan-Speak 15W8530K01 as a possible replacement as it has a lower FS of 30hz compared with the Vifa's 60hz and is coated paper instead of poly cone. I would use this driver in a sealed enclosure as it has a low enough EBP. Plotting in WINISD shows a vast improvement in bass roll-off. How else do these two drivers compare? Is there are difference in sound between paper and poly? The vifa’s cost £60 each, the Scan-Speak cost £150, are the scan-speak drivers over twice as good? |

Are you talking about the K00 or K01?
I have the K00 in the ZD5 designed by Zaph. It is a magnificent driver and way more bass than the Vifa which I also have in a speaker.

I had a system with the Vifa (7L BR). It is a very nice sounding driver, as you already know.
Now have one with the 15W (Troels 15W/98000). The SS is in a different league however - probably the best bass (and the rest) that can be had from a 5" driver. Impressive. The cost reflects that. Probably the last 5" you will buy. |

I meant the 15W8530K01, being the better suited in a sealed enclosure.
I thought the Vifa was a mid/woofer but after hearing it I am also of the thought that it is better suited as a Mid. But my original intention was to design a compact 2-way with out the need for extra woofers. I have since taken apart the small 2-way speaker I built with the Vifa P13 and SS-D2905 and was toying with the idea of making a narrow baffle 3-way floor stander with a Seas L22RNXP side mounted woofer. |

Well, all I can say is the K00 is also suited to a sealed enclosure. It produces amazing bass for its size and the midrange is really great.
