Hi to all. This post is a remark of me concerning the trend which I see concerninng the speakers impedance. Why we more and more 4 ohm speakers, than the past. All manufacturers tend to make the impedance of their speaker small. Ok this was used traditionaly in car audio due to low power amps their to increase the power. In hi-fi and most important in Hi-end I do not see any reason to have small impedance. Some reasons are:
1. You make the load more difficult for the amplifier 2. You have les power in class A from class A push-pull amplifiers and class AB. 3. You have to buy amplifiers with PA specification to drive them and you can not enjoy the purity of low wattage amp (mosfet or tube). Really do you see any reason to spend the thousands of dollars to buy something that does not seem correct. Any opinios?? |

Purely choice concerning the end users situation ,and /or the inevitable compromises we make to get the sound we want........plus a million other reasons

Most well made solid state amps will still have pretty good dampening and control right down to ~2Ohms these days, so I don't see a problem with 4Ohm speakers personally. If you are using a tube or other exotic amp that doesn't play nice at 4 Ohm, then don't buy them

Thanks for the advices, I will not buy them anyway, but I do not try to find spekers to buy. I just want now why a manufacturer will choose to make a 4 ohm speaker, when he can make it an 8 ohm. It is true that the amps nowdays goes to 2 ohm, why not the same speakers be a choice for exotic amps too. If we want to stress the amps lets make them 1 ohm it will be better then

1 Ohm is common in car stereo for a reason: Low supply voltage is easier to get more watts from with lower resistance loads. Requires less voltage rise. In the case of home stereo where the supply voltage is 10-20X as high, there is no reason to deal with the tradeoffs of working with a 1 Ohm speaker.
