Also check out the Onken bass enclosure. It's well liked and uses an Altec 416 for the big version or 414 for the "Petit" version.

Cool. You can probably find plans online. if not, just let me know. I have heard all three versions, the 15", 12" and 10". I don't remember the 12" well. I do remember that "bigger is better." It was the original 15" version I lusted for.

It had been my intention to write an “upgrade” article back then; I took pictures and had made some notes on what I did. It involved several minor cabinet modifications (and moving the horn slightly, easy), new drivers (I used a 2226 and BMS4550) and a new crossover.
If there is interest in such a thing, I will find the old hard drive this stuff is on.
Best,
Tom Danley

I for one would love to try it while waiting patiently for the diy synergy kit..

If you want to go to the trouble of building from scratch, you might want to invest in a better horn than the 811 or 511. Have a look at this thread:
Waveguides and horns

It's a long thread, but basically he's building very nice horns for a good price. You can contact him about them. A friend of mine on Maui bought 2 pair (mid and high) and is very happy with them. I have not heard them yet, but I've seen the measurements and those look very good indeed.

As for a crossover, there are steps to doing that right. You will have to measure, measure, measure. I've tired other people's crossovers on my rig and they just don't work right. I had to design my own.

Seems like this is a duplicate of an earlier thread, a year or two ago, in which I posed pix of what I called the A7x, a modded one that I did for a friend... suggest a search? Much useful info was exchanged there...

_-_-bear

This is one such post/thread: onken Onken w or A7 or Valencia

A search reveals more... search on VOT also A7
