Hey guys. I put together 2 pairs of speakers following an existing plan. One is done, and the other just needs the front baffle glued on.
Q1) Clamping painted wood - Following a look I liked for a different set of speakers I saw, I wanted to do the front baffle in black, where as the rest of the speaker is veneered ply. So I build it all up and painted the front baffle with latex based eggshell black paint. I was fairly satisfied how they came out. The rest of the speaker got water based poly. So I came to gluing them up, and realized I didn't want to mar the front baffle. I didn't want to dent them with a clamp. But latex paint always seems a little sticky, so I didn't want to smoosh some scrap wood into it and have the paint pull up or stick to the scrap. What I did was use wax paper over a bit of scrap. It didn't pull up the paint or leave an impression, but it did leave some wax on the baffle. So. How would you clean the wax? And what would have been better to use to pad the clamp? Maybe the latex paint was just gonna be trouble from the start. I've got the other pair to do, so the question isn't purely academic... Maybe Aluminum foil over scrap, if it's smooth, not crinkled? Q2) Magnets on driver frames - I didn't make any provision for grill attachment, but only now am I thinking it might be kinda nice to have one. The drivers both have stamped steel frames. I was thinking of sticking a grill to the driver flanges themselves with some magnets. Then I thought that might screw up the magnetic circuit of the driver. Or maybe it would make it too easy for the grill magnets / standoffs themselves to slide into the drivers and screw things up. Any comments on if this is a bad idea? Thanks for your input! Adam |

Q1a) Wax on latex paint? Try soap (liquid dishwashing soap) and water.
Q1b) for the second set I would recommend gluing the full cabinet up first, then paint the front baffle, then veneer. Good luck, -bill
