AvsB: Maximum Acoustic Output
I employ a distributed sub array with four 10” that is clean, transparent and exhibits no proximity effect crossed @ 135 Hz (active LP crossover, presumably 4th order but not positive). Main speakers employ the following dual-pole line-level high-pass crossover: 1st order @ 2.2 kHz 3rd order @ 80 Hz Per my math, relative to 2.2 kHz, the above crossover yields -32 dB @ 80 Hz, -68 dB @ 20 Hz. I can only presume the resulting proper tonal balance relates to the room’s acoustics + the response of the mid-bass employed: one per channel Dynaudio 17WLQ Esotec 8-Ohm 17cm, refer to "8-Ohm" (not 4-Ohm) datasheet HERE (crosses to a dome tweeter @ 2.2 kHz). I consider replacing the single 17WLQ with four 5cm square full-range drivers with these specs: Parameter Description Min Typical Max Units Re DC resistance 10% 7.9 +10% Ohms Le Inductance -10% 0.137 +10% mH BL Force factor 3.87 Tm fs Resonance frequency -20% 148 +20% Hz dDrv Voice coil diameter 25.4 mm Mms Moving mass 1.68 g Cms Compliance 0.70 mm N-1 Rms Suspension Loss 0.49 Ns m-1 Sd Radiating Area 17.2 cm2 Xmax Maximum coil excursion (p-p) 7.0 mm Sd Effective piston area 17.2 cm2 VAS Equivalent volume 0.29 L Qms Mechanical quality factor 3.18 Qes Electrical quality factor 0.83 Qts Total quality factor 0.66 Sens Sensitivity 83 dB/W/M 5cm Test Conditions Value Continuous power handling (weighted pink noise) 12W (TBC) Burst power handling (weighted pink noise) >24W (TBC) Operating temperature range -20 to 55° C Audio frequency range 80Hz to 20kHz (these values likely inflated) Sensitivities One 17WLQ mid-bass: 86 dB Four 5cm square full-range: 89 dB Suppose maximum power of the associated amp exceeds driver power handling. From about 150-2.2 kHz, with the above described line-level filters, how does maximum acoustic output compare, one 17WLQ vs. four 5cm? The 5cm FR graph is flat over to over 10 kHz (I intend to cross it around 6 kHz to a planar magnetic tweeter). TIA!
