Hi,
Software can replicated the response of vented systems, in the time and frequency domain. What it cannot do is be a physical port and what that does to max SPL, max power and cone excursion over the bass range. The only downside of venting is what happens below the port frequency, that is one reason why I like low tunings. I trying not to tell what the real issues are so you can find them yourself but one of them is : How do you fancy your SR71 having the SPL capability of 4 of the bass drivers at the port tuning frequency ? i.e. you have the equivalent of a 13" driver with +/-6mm (+) around 40Hz ? Software can't do that, it is your understanding that is "clumsy". rgds, sreten.

Hi,
My heavily EQ'd speakers run at modest volume but good bass extension. I can't hear the last octave of low bass in other rooms of my flat, nevermind bothering the neighbours. Reference to loudness curves will show "annoying" bass is far higher up than the last octave. That is unless of course, your speakers have no real deep bass. Due to the curves (and the way some walls are built) its the one note thump at higher volumes in the upper bass that really annoys. You can enjoy really deep bass at modest volume without annoying anyone, and the satisfaction of very low bass being present means you need less real volume. rgds, sreten.

Guys:
Thank you Sreten for addressing the original question I asked, which was if a 1/4" difference on the width of a Parts Express cabinet would affect the Zaph design. I could not imagine that it would, but I have no abilty to do these complex calculations that so many of you are able to do. I've been wanting to try a pair of those curved PE cabinets, and Madisound is close by, so the Zaph ZRT looks like a very good option. The other comments are also interesting, but in my case I have no interest in the SR71 kit anyway. Again, thank you for the answer! Homebuilder |
