Default $1000 budget...what to build or clone?

The lowdown: I want to build a 5.2 system. I already designed and built subs, so I need two fronts, rears, and a center channel.

The budget: $1000 including MDF, drivers, and XO parts (though I may go active XO like my current speakers).

The question: I want to build the best system I can for about $1000, not including amps or finishing. I've been eying the Swan F1.1's to clone simply because they are gorgeous and I've heard them before. However I don't need that much bass in my mains. My subs will be XO'd at 80Hz, so ideally the mains are good to there or just a bit below. I'd like a MMTMM arrangement to eliminate baffle step.

Any suggestions of preexisting designs or high end setups to try and clone?

Let's change that a bit. $1000 for just drivers, nothing else. I can bump it to $1200 if necessary.

Good capasitors are audible with good drivers you do not want to mis those in yourspeaker. And they cost about the same as a tweeter.

Troels gravesen has done a lot of building and testing I would recommend his best scanspeak design. It will blow the budget I am affraid.
It has the ingredients of a god design a speaker for sub low a high quality midrange and tweeter, and XO using quality superior-Z capacitors.

Hi,

You won't go too far wrong using this family of designs :

Zaph|Audio - ZA5 Speaker Designs with ZA14W08 woofer and Vifa DQ25SC16-04 tweeter

There is a MMTMM, and an interesting discussion of its properties.

If you want to attempt active, all the transfer functions are shown,
note the cleverly included notch filters done with a small capacitor
across the main bass inductor @9KHz, they will be tricky to include.

rgds, sreten.

I built the full size Statements for my brother. They exceeded my expectations 10 fold. Including a nice veneer, I spent less than $800 for everything.
