Default Revisiting The Insignia

Anyone else still using their Insignia's? I bought mine real cheap when the craze was going on. Had them in the house for a couple of years, then when I was playing with other speakers, I moved them to the garage. I still liked how they sound. No mods were done at all and they were fine for my use back then when working in the garage.

Earlier this year I thought I would plug the Insignia's T/S specs that DLR had on his website into WinISD. Looked as though these drivers were more suited for a larger enclosure. So, I built some tower cabs. Boy, these drivers are so much better in the bass department. During this test I added Zaph's add-on x-over. If I do a permanent x-over it will Dennis Murphy's.

I decided to revisit my Insignia's too. I finally decided to do mods after having them for 4-5 years. I'll try to get some pics up as I go. Currently, I'm experimenting with adding a 3 layer felt ring that is suspended between the cone and the spider to damp out the higher mid freqs. The results so far are a reduction of midrange harshness. I'm assuming what is happening is that when sound waves leave the back of the cone or dust cap they normally reflect off the basket and magnet pole piece, and some of the sound shoots back through the cone. Either to combine in phase or out of phase (dependent on wavelength, distance between cone and basket etc.) causing a peaky response.

Anyone know if this idea is correct???

It's a definite improvement over the stock x/o. Not really sure how to explain it. The midrange is smoother. I was more blown away with how much these drivers sound in a larger box.
