Red face Crossover between same speaker

Newbie... using the same model speaker for your bass and mids.... I am sure it has been done and may be done quite often. Can anyone tell me benefits and drawbacks... do the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. Seems to me freeing up the middle speaker and visa versa and having the same speaker model would make a cleaner crossover. Help me out guys. It is a vented design.

if the driver has both good mids & good lows, no problem, except that baffle step will need to be dealt with in the xover. If you use one driver for mids+ bass, and the other with a 1st order xover at baffle step frequency for bass only, you get a "2.5" way xover, the simplest way to deal with BSC. 3 way or 2.5? depends on the capabilities of the driver (how loud you listen), & whether your amp can handle a lower impedance load.

The benefit you suggest is one thing but a crossover also creates problems when you attempt to blend sound from different locations. I wouldn't think it's worth it.

The JBL 4435 Studio Monitor is a fine example of a 2.5 way design.

I agree with PeteMcK. You need a driver that handles the mids well and the .5 driver is your baffle step.

Well again I am a newbie. I know that dividing loads between speakers can reduce distortion. I was thinking of the above referenced speaker the m8n or m8a hivi. Its response chart seems fine and I am getting a good modeling in winisd in a vented system with 3 drivers without going to large box. May use one for bass and one for mids crossing to electrostat at 600-450. ??? If you all can share your experience it would be appreciated. I also had the curious idea of running three together working as a team uncrossed for bass and mids and crossing a two way very low cross to electrostatic for upper mids and up
Thanks

Dividing the range between a pair of drivers the way you have described, to reduce distortion is not worth the tradeoff. Your other idea of running a handful of them within the same range as each other will achieve the goal you are seeking in a much better way. What you would then have is a line array and I would suggest you research these if you plan to run them up in frequency.

Thanks AllenB. I will read up! I understand there are phase issues? Potentially... will look into this...
