Default Horizontal MT configuration in 3-way?

I thought this classic 3 way configuration caused too many problems with off axis response:

puremusicgroup - 4312 E Studio Monitor

What is the trick to making this work without flipping the box on its side?

Until you realise they were usually turned onto the sides, which is the trick.
Can't remember the name but a classic British box from the 60s and 70 was also meant to be used on the side
