Default First 2 way speaker build.

Ok, so here's the thing. I recently got the idea of building a pair of 2 way speakers, I don't have any experience in audio or electronics but I am determined to learn.

I have been doing some research and believe i understand what i'm getting into and i have a friend very experienced with electronics that can help design the crossovers and everything. So right now my biggest problem is the drivers, I don't even know where to start looking. My price range for the Drivers is around 300$ give or take as needed. So i figured 75-100$ ea for the woofer 35-75$ for the tweeter. But really, I have no clue. Should i put more money into the woofer? tweeter?

Im not looking for anything that will shake my room. I just want something that will sound better then if i spent the money on say, a pair of wharfedale 10.1's (or any other speaker in that price range)

So far from looking around i've found-

Woofer-

SEAS Prestige CA18RNX (H1215) 7" Coated Paper Cone: Madisound Speaker Store

Peerless 830883 Exclusive Nomex 7" Woofer: Madisound Speaker Store

Tweeter

Morel CAT298 1" Soft Dome Tweeter: Madisound Speaker Store

Vifa NE25VTS-04 1" Silk Dome Tweeter: Madisound Speaker Store

But these are more of an semi educated guess as to what would work, really I have no clue.

If anyone has any recommendations for good drivers that would be greatly appreciated, maybe some speakers you built in this price range?

THANKS!

Learn acoustics takes a lot of years. Go to a proven design :

Mimir

Idunn

Zaph|Audio - ZA-SR71

SB Acoustics :: Eka

Look at : DIY Loudspeaker Projects Troels Gravesen
CA18RLY/22TAF-G
Compact Studio MonitorKIT #

I rather recommend :
CA18RNX
PEERLESS-NOMEX-164

etc.

Even if the drivers are no longer available ( again ) the information on the basics of design are valid

+1, best way to learn if you haven't ever completed a speaker is to use the parts from someone else's build.

Paul Carmody also has some great designs for newbie builders, lots of them weigh in right around your budget, and some significantly cheaper, like the overnight sensation, which could prove a great build to try as a first speaker.
