I am interested in making my own loudspeakers.
So for instance I go and pick my speakers. Where do I start? If I want a horn for my highs, do I just pick any impedance? 8 Ohm 150 rms handling lets say... Now to get a midrange driver? Lets say I like an 8 inch woofer. Does it have to be 8 ohms too? Or can it be 4 ohms? Let's say I picked 8 ohms. It is 300 RMS handling This would make a 4 ohm load to my amplifier? Now let's say I made a box for them... I need to get passive filters for them. I know that I want 4000hz -above for my horn. How do I get a passive filter for it? How do I install it? Can I buy this for it? 5 kHz High Pass 8 Ohm Crossover Or do I have to build it myself? How do I build it myself if so? What am I looking at? Does this change the impedance of my 4 ohm load to the amp? Do I wire it after I wire to the Woofer? And for the woofer, I want it band passed. 150 hz - 4000 hz... How do I go about getting that filter? Can I buy one for cheap? How do I know if it can handle the 450 rms I will be putting into this speaker? When online they say 8 ohm or 4 ohm. Do I select 8 ohm because my driver is 8 ohms? How do I build it and install it? How do I know what my amplifiers impedance will be? Can these systems hold up to my amplifiers output? What does amplifier output have to do with any of this? Drown me in knowledge... PLEASE! |

I recommend "The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook" by Vance Dickason. I got one used at Amazon pretty cheap. I guarantee you will be drowning in knowledge!

So I would start in a site with good instructions like Troels Gravesen And a lot to read: Lenard Audio Institute - Speaker principles PE - How To Build Your Own Loudspeakers DIYAudio - Introduction to designing crossovers without measurement Last edited by Inductor; 17th September 2011 at 03:04 AM. |
