I have never really liked the midrange of the large Eminence and B&C woofers in some econowave-style builds. To me they sound coloured and edgy. I am looking to mate it with a tractrix horn at 800hz crossover via minidsp so demands on the woofer will be less than the typical econowave build but still I dont know if I will be happy with it playing this high. Ill be using an old cabinet with a 12" hole so size is fixed.
Can anyone recommend some 12" woofers that play smooth and clean up to and beyond this point for a easy crossover to the horn? Decent efficiency to 40-50hz and a reasonable price would be nice too. |

I use Beyma 12LX60, it is good sounding, and uses the same huge motor from the 15" and 18" models.

Hi Vadi, what crossover point are you using with them?

I am planning for a similar setup and have been recommended the Ciare NDH 12-3 by Usspeaker - Unfortunately I haven't tried or bought it yet. Or maybe the 12" - drivervault can be of some help...

It is a 2nd order LR at 800Hz. Voices have sounded very nice. The upper midrange is a Seas H1304 MCA12rc.
I don't have measurements, and I use a MiniDSP too.

It is very sad, but Beyma stopped the production of the 12LX60 over a year ago. But Beymas 12G40 is a great sounding driver, that does 800Hz without any problems. Specs: http://beyma.de/fileadmin/seiten/dow...z-12G40_1_.pdf

The mid you mention using has excellent on and off axis response to 400hz and with the same 2nd order filter, i see absolutely no reason NOT to use it that low. As to a 'sensitive' woofer, given the limits of the midrange no need for anything more than 88db 1w/1m unless this design is OB. Given this usable range of 400hz on down and 88db sensitivity most any quality non-pro sound woofer gets this done quite easily and with a spacious cabinent will play lower than any 12" pro midwoofer.
As in any design, it's all about the midrange and you've chosen an excellent one that i'd capitalize on, keeping the entire midrange out of the range of an XO component.....say to 3 khz or so. |
