Default Pyle PDW15125 for OB

Has anyone experimented with this driver? I cant find any reviews. Although it has a Qts of close to .4 the manufacturers graph show spls of close to 100 at 50hz. I wonder if these are real.

I am looking for a woofer to build a two way OB using fairly sensitive AN driver (super 12 cf) or vintage console FR. The highly recommended alpha driver's spl is too low.

The price is not too bad at around 100 dollars

Suggestions?

Passive or Active ?

Active : no problem.

Passive : problematic, 0.4Qts is low. You will need a lot of equalisation to make decent bass. Depend of the size of the baffle, i think the final sensitivity will be near an Alpha 15. Big magnet, high sensitivity but less bass. There is no secret.
PPA 15 seems better :
PylePro - PPA15 - 800 Watt Professional Premium PA 15'' Woofer

I was thinking passive and play with a U or H frame. The PPA15 has quite low SPL so i will need to pad down the high efficiency FR driver. My target is to use low wattage SE amp. I have read many of the posts and there seem to be mixed results. Some people have had success with both low and high Qts.

I read on another post that I would need two Alphas to mate against higher sensitivity drivers. I want to avoid the size of using two 15 inch woofers.

The key is doing things in the right way. No choice here. You should make a large baffle.
See as example
The width is 0.9m, height 0.9m, a monster panel ! The Deltalite II 2515 needs an extra equalization.

Perhaps if you use a 18" or a 21" but the panel must be large.

I have the p d w 21 250 and it did not measure the proper parameters with my program It was saId that the q t s was 0.3 but when I measured It was 0.68. as well all the other theil/ small parameters were off too and the sensitivity was 93 d b's instead of 107,you may want to get it tested before you go ahead

Jerome: the wider baffle definitely works. Last week I found out about the OB sound by building a plywood baffle with the dimensions from the below link, they are very similar to the ones you suggested.

Open Baffle

Problem is they are too large and would get me permanent residence in the doggie house. Also I used a vintage 12 inch Coax driver and the highs are too low in the vertical plane. I did like the general sound a lot, I put a tweeter higher a ear level (ambiance pot on the 12 incher all the way down) and it was reallly good.

I did run one of the simulators available online and it does clearly show that a wide baffle would be needed or a high Qts driver used to compensate for the narrower baffle. There are still some sites recommending the Deltalite and the Altec 416 in narrower baffles. Both of these drivers appear to have low Qts.

Maybe I have no option but to biamp.

Thanks for the feedback. Bad parameters would be a bad thing.

I love the look of this project. Thanks for posting!

Oh, and i would pass on that very expensive Pyle driver for use on ob... i'd go cheaper and find one with a higher qts... preferably above 1. But that's just me.

I created a filtered excel spreadsheet from data in the PE site and sorted the drivers by SPL and then by Qts. Are the Selenium drivers any good?
