Default Looking for a 2way existing design in around 650$

Hi,

I am looking to make pair of 2way stand mount speakers for my main system, these will be replacing the B&W 602s2. I am looking for proven existing designs on which I can get some feedback. My budget is around 650$ max. This is for drivers and crossovers only. I don’t mind using el-cheapo parts (electrolytic caps, laminated core inductors) for the time being and upgrade later and spend most of the money on drivers. I guess that leaves around 550-600$ for the drivers.

I already have a css sdx15 based ported sub with hpsa500 plate amp, so no worries on the bass front, though decent volume in a large room is. Preferably a sealed system, but I am not too hung up on this.

chain
Yamaha RXV 663, might make myref C or gainclone for 2 channel audio say in an year or so.
Source htpc with asus essence sound card.
Preferably not 4 ohms, as currently my AVR might not be able to handle it. If it can, then I have no issues with 4 ohms

Room
The system is in my living, dining room, kitchen and its plenty large, roughly say 15x30 feet. Listening distance is around 10-12 ft.

Usage
Classic rock, blues, metal, jazz, western/Indian classical. In that order of preference.
Movies

Neutral sound, detailed, non fatiguing, should be able to listen for hours.
I should be able to listen to it at reasonably loud volumes, not ear shattering levels though.
It should have a decent off axis response also, no head in a vice systems please.

I have so far made the css sdx15 sub, a small alpair 7mk2 (love it) based sealed desktop speakers. I am in the process of making a sub (tb 1363sb with jack hidley’s plate amp) and overnight sensations. That’s all the experience I have with diy so far.

The problem with this kind of budget is that I cant go with an all seas excel or scanspeak based system. I can either purchase an expensive tweeter or an expensive woofer, not both. So what would you do in this case, spend more money on woofer or on tweeter. I guess it will be the woofer as most of such systems I see use a more expensive woofer rather than an expensive tweeter (e.g. zd5).

Someday I will upgrade and go for a zrt or ekta grande or something like that.

So far I have found the following systems that fit my budget, but having heard neither of these speakers/drivers, I have no clue what to expect. I have listed the approximate driver costs also. I have listed a few FS also that I liked from descriptions

From troelsgravesen’s site:

SEAS W15CY001 + Fountek NeoCD3
515$
Seas 5
W15cy001 with 22 TAF/G
About 400$

SEAS W15CY001 midbass and HIQUPHON OWI tweeter
About 550$

TJL_2W
SEAS W18E001 with T25C003
About 580$
Floor stander, but complicated cab. Don’t know if I can get the required dampings here in india.

Amish
18W/8545-00 + D2905/9500
620$, doesn’t leave much money for xo.

Ellam XT
Vifa XT25TG-30-04, SS 15w/8530k00
500$

Studio 101
ScanSpeak 18W/8542-00 + SEAS 27TFFC

CSM
ScanSpeak 18W/8545-K00 + Vifa XT25TG-30-04
420$

CNO T25
SEAS W18NX001 + T25C003 (E00036)
585$
FS, complicated cab.

SS rediscovery kit
8531G00 and SS HDS 9130 tweeter
650$ from madisound

ZD5
I can get this at about 650 including crossover, but I am a little scared of being able to make the crossover and fit it into the small enclosure.

What about usher drivers, I heard these are pretty good, but if a diy usher cant beat the x-718, I am not interested. I have heard these with a friend and although these are good speakers, I wish to do better than these.

So far, from browsing, I think I like the seasw15, w18, scan 8530, 8531. And how does the 8545 fare as compared to these. I am in no hurry as my friend will be bringing these to me at around Christmas time.

Please feel free to suggest other speakers. This list is just what I came up with.

er18dxt drivers cost 260$, my budget is more than twice that. can't I do better than that. zaph has no 2way in this price range apart from zd5 and that crossover scares me.

Have a look at Troels Gravesen's Quattro QUATTRO These will do the job, and then some. The Dtqwt variant sounds just beautiful and your amp will live an easy life at loud volumes with the Quattros. To be able to play incanely loud, ask troels kindly to add a high-pass filter to the midbass - e.g. 80Hz.

Don't forget to add another $200 for the crossover parts. Not that these are necessarily the speakers for you, just sayin.
