Greetings Peoples, I am going to build a mono horn speaker and would like to keep it a simple 2way with say an altec291/288 on a 500hz horn and possibly an edgar showhorn. What are the current crop of speakers that are suitable for the show horn or alternatively are there better horn enclosure options out there. I'm happy with a solid 50hz but if I could sqeeze it to 40-45hz all the better. It will probably go in a corner and I would prefer front loaded. Thanks in advance
cheers fergs |

1) When you choose an all-horn system you trade simple enclosure design, wider driver band-width, and lower driver cost, for higher efficiency, pattern control and increased project complexity. 2) Because of 1) above, do not expect to cover more than a decade for each horn/driver used, and expect the system will be costly and difficult to build. Here, time + money = cost 3) Given 1) & 2) above, a 3-way system will be required to cover the audio spectrum. Approximate frequency divisions follow: LF: 20-200 Hz (Bass) MF: 200-2000 Hz (Voice) HF: 2000-20,000 Hz (The Rest) 4) The bass horn must incorporate a room corner to facilitate the required physical extension of its mouth. Klipsch or equivalent here is about as good as it gets, for an at-home footprint. 5) MF Horn will still be large and may require acoustic damping be applied to adjoining room walls to kill early reflections from them. 6) Use of a digital c/o with dedicated power amplifiers is recommended to deal with the required signal delays, response tailoring and filtering for each horn/driver used. These facilities are mandatory, if success is to be obtained in a reasonable period of time and optimal system performance is to be achieved. 7) HF drive circuit should incorporate a series, DC blocking capacitor to protect the tweeter, even though a c/o is used to filter the signal going to it. 8) My Driver preferences are as follows, High Frequency TAD Compression Drivers High Frequency Driver?TAD Mid Frequency JBL 2485J Compression Driver http://www.jblpro.com/pub/components/2485.pdf JBL 2490H Compression Driver http://www.jblpro.com/pub/components/2490.pdf JBL 2169H, 2169J Open Frame 8" Driver There are other issues as well, but these are the ones that come to mind at the moment now. 8) Driver Preferences
Mid Frequency (Continued) Community Light & Sound M4 Compression Driver http://www.communitypro.com/files/li...ts/M4_SPEC.pdf (Some members here do not like this driver. It is capable of awesome performance, but tweaking a horn for it takes lots of time. This driver has been around a long time, and is still manufactured by CL&S. Do not buy used ones. Most are worn-out from protracted use and abuse. Low Frequency There are a lot to choose from. Candidates include those manufactured by Precision Devices Precision Devices International Limited and P-Audio P.Audio System Co., LTD 9) Getting the MF section right will be the greatest challenge. For a start, study this JBL document. http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/suppor...=201&doctype=3 Regards, WHG |
