Default Matching driver spl or efficiency ?

If one were to construct a 3-way design using a woofer rated @ 88db, would it be better chose a midrange with the same spl, or use a higher rated one than pad it down ? What if the mids spl's are say 2db lower than the woofers, does this generally lower the whole speakers efficiency ? Reason for the question's are most 4-5" inch mids generally are rated lower ect...

Higher rated and pad. Once you factor in BSC, you lose 6dB at full-comp anyway, and that's more you'd have to lose.

If the mids are 2dB lower, you may need to of them to keep up.

Hi,

Depending on the bass/mid c/o point and the baffle step frequency
you can need the same for a low c/o point to needing a sensitivity
for high point lower by the amount of BSC applied to the bass unit.

Its all about how much and how you do BSC (baffle step correction.)

rgds, sreten.
