What would be the optimal midrange driver to complete Eton 11-581 bass and Seas No-Ferro 650 tweeter lineup? Also from Eton's range (same membrane material as the bass) or you would choose something else?
I am thinking about two possibilities: 6-7" bass-mid with a low crossing point (around 80-120 Hz), or a dedicated 4 - 5 " midrange? Closed or open back? Your opinions/suggestions are welcome. |

Always open back if possible and you pick the midrange first. It is by far the most important driver so you find the top and bottom to match it not the other way round unless you already have the high and low drivers.

Yes I do have the bass and the tweeter already .... so have to work with these two and fill in the mid .

OK, well find one that overlaps the others by a wide margin so the XO's are a little easier for you.

You can take the Eton up to about 400 hz without any trouble. From there I would take a 4" and cross to the Seas not much higher than 2 khz. That will provide the smoothest off-axis curves.

Isn't 400 Hz a little high for a 10" bass .? Eton suggests it's optimal use is up to about 100Hz - even if that is too conservative let's say 200. But 400?
Then again you are probably right - I am talking only based on numbers here - since the box is not ready yet I haven't listened to it yet... Would you suggest Eton 4" or something else? |

Actually I think you could use the Eton up to a much higher frequency than 400 hz. Maybe even 1 khz or higher, but of course only if the higher directivity at those frequencies is useful in your design. The frequency response is very good to above 1 khz.
As for the exact midrange driver, choose whichever one you like. There are many good choices out there. Eton has some nice midranges too.
