Default SB34NRX75 + BMS 4550 + Eminence H290?

How about this combination for a big ***, full frequency, studio monitoring system? What are the immediate and evident potential drawbacks?

SB Acoustics SB34NRX75 woofer
BMS 4550 CD
Eminence H290 Horn
MiniDSP for crossover @ 1 KHz, with the option of gentle correction with parametric equalization, if necessary.
200L vented cab tuned to the low 20s.

Thanks,

Well, all of your links don't go to the products stated, for starters.

Hi,

I can see your intention - but things wonŽt work out: Using a high-efficiency driver-horn combinaton (per se a good idea) together with a hifi LF-Driver always leads to an assembly with the low frequencies subjectively lagging miles behind the upper frequencies.
Another drawback is the need to reduce the horn drivers level for about 20dB or so - youŽll have to use transformers for best results.
Also, the bass driver shows some faults in his SPL graph - there are better ones out there at higher levels. With 200 Liters IŽll opt for a 15"-driver, go for about 96 dB SPL and forget about the 20something hertz.....

Regards

Thomas

Francec here is the link for the BMS4550... The other links are working, on my machine...

Thomas Schmidt, I am not sure I understand what you are saying... but I seem to read that a 12" woofer + CD/horn combination in a large cabinet, tuned to the low 20s is not going to work... I have a huge Econowave built along the same lines sitting right here, and it sounds great to me...

I believe the MiniDSP will do this easily, in the digital domain...

Is there anything out there with a similarly low fs, capable of reaching 1 KHz?

Thanks,

Well, technically spoken it is going to work.
You are right - I missed out the part with actice crossover. Nevertheless - there is a thing called listening experience which tells me that you will have a lightning fast Mid-to-Treble performance combined with a rather dull and slow bass performance.
Well, there is no such thing as free lunch - IŽd still recommend a larger driver with higher Fs. But why not trying a large closed cabinet with equalization?

Thomas

AT, it should work fine. There are a ton of successful 2 way WG builds out there both passive and active.

I don't know the SB driver beyond reading the datasheet but I can't see why not. Expensive though. I'd go for a JBL 2225/6 myself, and the PE QSC WG clone.

I'm always extremely wary of descriptions that use terms such as these to describe sound. I agree with you, audiothings and Brett, that many of that ilk have been built successfully. Why you would want to exclude a mid-range driver when you are trying to achieve a monitor is the question that eludes me.

The JBL definitely is a good choice for such a combination.

Because it's not generally needed. Look at the Geddes Summa for example.
