Default Advice On Realistic Nova-15 - Gonna Gut Them

Hello, Bought a pair of Nova-15's at a thrift shop for $10. Wanted these for my garage to be used with a T-Amp (Muse M20). They sound horrible however. Distortion is overwhelming when going past 10:00 on the volume. But cabinets and grills are great.

So, I wanna gut them and install new drivers and crossovers. I have a pair of 15-year-old Danish made Vifa D19TD I could use for the tweeters. What 8" Woofers would work well if I use the Vifa Tweeters and any crossover ideas? I'm just starting with this hobby and wouldn't mind using a prebuilt crossover. My price range is under $40 per woofer as these will be garage duty and abused volume wise. I was looking at the Dayton's DC200 for $23. Anyone have experience with these? Thanks for any ideas.

They are bass reflex but I could seal the port and go sealed if need be.

I had some D19TDs some time ago. If I remember correctly they are pushing it to be crossed at 3kHz. I wouldn't think they'd be a great match for an 8" woofer.

Hmm, yeah, looking at the specs they go down to 3,500 khz and the Dayton DC200 woofer goes up to 3,000khz. Probably not a good match.

Would the PE phenolic ring tweeters work in this setup? They run 2,000-15,000. I don't mind the tweeter topping out out 15k. If this were the combo I bought would I want to crossover at 2k or 2.5k? Any thoughts? Going to start the tear-down tomorrow on the cabinets. I'll clean them out and reinforce the insides with some Durham's Water Putty

Thanks!

That tweeter looks like it would have a slightly more narrow dispersion. Not ideal but better suited than the D19TD, and better for an 8" woofer. I'd make sure the Dayton was happy going up to 2kHz, maybe a review from someone who has heard it?
