Default Would a port help these speakers?

Technics SB-CL50

specs from http://www.vintagetechnics.info/loudspeakers.htm

1991-1993 then $260.00 new

These are mint condition and well built but sound muffled to me maybe more so in mids than bass.

7.125 inch
woofer (per Vintage technics)(61/2 inches maximum across foam surround) not really sure how to measure.

1 inch soft dome tweeter

Anechoic Frequency Response, 42hz -25khz +-16 dec

Recommended Minimum Amp Power, Watts 160

8 ohms

7 inches deep x8 1/2 wide x15 tall. 3/4 inch particle board walls (Vintage technics said they were 8x8x15, not quite right)

interior volume 51/2 x 7 x 13.5 = 520 cubic inches or .3 cubic foot

I have the Technics numbers from the drivers.

I have a rear port tube from some Denon bookshelfs I could experiment with which measures 1 3/4 diameter by 3 inches. it would protrude 21/4 into the box. There is not enough area on the faceplate for a hole so it would have to be rear ported. I would have to commit to drilling a 13/5 inch hole in the back. I could put it anywhere in the lower half of the back, the upper corners or down either upper side. I have to avoid the upper middle as that is where the crossover/terminal block and decal are.

I can't find any useful web discussions on these. I am not really concerned about jamming them onto a closed back shelf. Front ported might be nice but the biggest tube I could use would be about 1 inch. I don't want to mess up the front baffle either so I think I am stuck with rear port.

I would imagine the first response I might hear is these woofers are two big for the box but I have to work with what I have. I am not prepared to spend any money on these. The woofer and tweeter appear high quality. The tweeter looks like the one in in Advent Laureates. There is no rot anywhere, these look like new.

The crossover looks quality and consist of 2 chokes, three good sized caps, two ceramic resistors and a small round flat component, can't see what it sayd, about the size of a nickle. I am not sure if the woofer is filtered or straight wired.

I can't find any current discussions ar valuations so I am not to worried I might ruin thier value. I plan on keeping these. The worst I'd have to do is close up the port hole in the back.

If anyone could analyze these boxes and recommend regarding the port tube and any general discussion of these I'd much appreciate it. I know Technics gets short shrift on some forums but these look very good. I also have a pair of Technics SB L36 which I like.

Thanks
