Default Steel & Magnetics, Driver motor construction questions

So, I'm resurrecting my project to build some homemade AMTs. I'm posting in the main forum because I thought my question was more general.

For driver builders out there, how much difference in magnetic field am I going to see between different types of steel? If we are talking cold-rolled steel that is readily available, the options start at 1006, and we have 1008, 1010, 1012, etc where the last two digits are the hundredth of a percent of carbon in the steel. I know that the more carbon, the less magnetic the steel is. Or the lower the B/T is. I found a table that gives some parameters, but it doesn't list all the formulations of steel, and I'm not really sure how much it matters. There are other materials like pure iron or permendur, but I think those would get cost-prohibitive for my budget.

My guess is that in a perfect world I would want to use the lowest carbon possible to achieve the highest flux density in the gap. Seeing as I've never done this before, and I think we have a few folks here that know more than me about these things, I thought I'd ask.

Thanks
John
