Hi all
Just like the title, this is an attempt at a DIY project using my old beloved Wharfedale E70's I've owned these speakers for years now and always loved the way they sounded. I got these in pretty poor cosmetic condition to start with and after one or two half hearted attemps at cleaning them up they eventually started to start to die of speaker decay and were retired to the back of the garage or Hifi graveyard as the wife calls it. Recently i accquired a Nice Adcom Amp and Pre and once again started yearning for the sounds of my E70's. Upon digging them up from the graveyard i realised that my babies were beyond simple repair and that i'd have to think about sending the drivers away for prossional rebuilds. ![]() SpeakerWorks in Sydney did a fantastic job rebuilding the 2 Main and 4 Mid drivers, the tweets looked and sounded fine so were left alone. ![]() ![]() The X-overs i will leave as is for now. I have read that these can be improved and upgraded to better quality parts but for now will stick with just getting the rebuilt drivers into some new cabs. ![]() I really want BIG BOLD BOXY looking cabs, i love these speakers and i want em to really stand out, may as well **** the wife off too while i'm at it! 1200h x 320w x 400d using 18m MDF with and extra 25mm Baffle. I like tall speakers and i think the bold heavy alloy metal drivers will fill the baffle out nicely. 320 Width is pretty much the narrowest the cabs can be and fit the 10" woofer. 400 deep gives me the volume and 1200 hight will give a nice spread on the drivers. The original cabs always looked a bit crowded IMO. The original cabs were a 70L design so i'll section the new cabs off so that the Main driver's volume will still be close to orig 70L spec. The Mids and tweets will also be sectioned in a MTMW design. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thats bout it for now, any input or advice would be most appreciated. This is a first time build for me on a speaker this size so pretty much just winging it as i go

swap out the electrolitic capacitors (metal cans) in the crossover for new ones. The new capacitors should be non polorised (np) electrolitic at the same or higher voltage rating as the original and of the same value. If the capacitor is smaller than 5uF replace with a film capacitor of the same size. At the age of the speaker the capacitors will have dried out and will effect the sound.
In addition I wouldn't change the location of the drivers as they are already in mtm configuration and the tweeter may have to be close to the woofer. Then again no harm in trying the new configuration.
