so i dismantled a pair of polk monitors built in '87 and the bottom 2 "speakers" were just cones. There was no magnet, no wires, no nothing, just a shell of a speaker. The crossover wasn't even wired for those 2 extra ports. I found them in my parents storage. They said the bought them from a store when they were new... is there some reason for this im unaware of? or did some sleezy salesman rip them off?

Are those passive radiators? Need to know the model number to make a determination. It very well could be that is the way they are supposed to be.

OMG! Were there any other drivers in the cabinet? Was there a tweeter with any wires going to it? WTF!
Unless those cones were passive radiators??? |

Probably passive radiators: Unpowered and designed to resonate at particular frequencies a bit like a bass port but implemented differently.

so I looked up passive radiator and those are definitely passive radiators. Im surprised there is enough pressure inside that box to run those. The tower has 2 - 5" and a tweeter and 2 of the passive radiators.
Thanks, I was shocked when i saw that. |

Passive radiators are used where the required bass reflex tuning is such that a port is not practical.
At the time, this was one of Polk's hgher end models. dave

My friend couldn't believe when was told that there was no driver on the passive radiator (Polk Audio) he was staring at. He had to open the radiator to proof it.
Last night my other friend told me that he has found a unique piano. He was shocked that he couldn't find the speakers!
