Default Upgrading Polk Towers

I have a set of Polk RT20P towers which have a powered subs in the bottom of the enclosures. The problem with these speakers is that if I turn the power for the subs past the three o'clock position they become very boomie. Are there any fixes to this so I can get the bass I want without the boominess?
