Hello
Friend has got some cheapo speakers for his car and has asked the question "will a better crossover help?". Currently the speaker kit is wired is thus: ---------- Woofer - direct connection to stereo output "Fli Comp5 Midwoofer" 4 ohms. Speaker size : 5.25” (130mm) RMS power : 75 watts Peak power : 225 watts Minimum input : 35 watts RMS Sensitivity : 88dB Frequency response : 60Hz - 20KHz ------------- Tweeter - connected to stereo output via series 5.6uF, 100V electrolytic (Make: 'SPT'). "Fli Comp 1 Tweeter" 4ohms. RMS power : 55 watts Peak power : 165 watts Minimum input : 25 watts RMS Sensitivity : 90dB Frequency response : 1.5kHz - 20KHz -------------- Any ideas for a crossover, greatly appreciated! (Strange how a tweeter is used with what appears to be a full-range speaker....). Cheers, Andy |

Without filter, the woofer gives the best sonic, but may be some midrange peaks. But usually the tweeter is even worse. If you add filter to the woofer to tame the peaks, the tweeter will not be able to match the woofer to handle lower frequency than before (means you have to change the tweeter). If the annoying "peaks" are from tweeter, smaller capacitor (e.g. 4.7 uF) may help a little. |

Sorry, passive please!
Exercise is a simple one really. Speakers not installed or even tested yet, he was wondering if this strange arrangement of apparently full range speaker used with tweeter driven by 5.6uF was the way to go, or could a better crossover be considered. My simple advice was 'it's in a car environment, who cares!!!!' LOL But besides this, it seemed an interesting question to me.Andy |

Usually the mid-woofer is not a fullrange, like you say but a driver with inherent high frequency attenuation.
There's nothing wrong with a first order crossover for the tweeter. Look at the vintage Dynaco A-25. |
