Default some dumb questions that are driving me nuts

okie, I've only got 3 questions that I am sure are really stupid. Bear with me here.

What is a dipole?
What is an open baffle?
How do these work?

okie, so an open baffle system basically has the driver mounted on a board sticking up in the air. what prevents the sound waves from reflecting off of surfaces behind the speaker and causing cancelation?

i looked at the site, but he didn't really explain what a dipole was.

as far as i know, thats the whole point, the rear wave cancels with the front causing a slow 6db/octave roll off from a high frequency depending on baffle size.

do a search for Dipole in this forum, try Threads only not posts when u search.

u need HEAPS OF excursion x area and mid Q woofer, and EQ to boost low end

eg buy 2 15s for dipole instead of a 12 in sealed box

its kinda crazy and sounds like not the right thing to do,,but sounds nice to many people.
