I am ready to fix in place my fronts for my bass/midbass cabinet. It is 30" deep so I thought I would give a holler on wheather I sholud give the cabinet a filling of Dacron.
I was advised to fill the midbass but not the bass.I am using 2 AT-12" for bass(200hz). The cabinet is completely lined with 2" open cell foam and was told that was all I should do. Any thoughts or do you concur. thanks john

Hi,
The open cell foam lining is what is normally done for vented boxes. For sealed boxes stuffing with Dacron / BAF is all you need, much cheaper. You can lightly stuff vented boxes also with the above to affect the tuning / damping somewhat, but it is not usual and its not necessary with a lining, though you could add an extra layer on the back. extra la rgds, sreten.

I guess it's not ported from the looks of the pics.
Sealed, I fill with fibreglass or when I can get it cotton waste. I use glass in ported midbasses, but where I place it depends upon the position of the drivers and port(s). I don't block the flow between them but fill the rest of the space. I'll also use an open fabric stapled into position to hold stuffing where I want it. Though this is not ported but the pic gives an idea what I mean. With my current design, the driver is mounted high like this with the ports exiting the bottom. |

I think the idea is to damp out frequencies well above port tuning from 'bouncing around' inside the cab and finding their way out either through the port or the actual cone.
With that in mind I use foam on all sides and the bracing but double the thickness on the back opposite the driver. Extra fluffy stuff never seemed necessary but that doesn't mean that it can't be beneficial. Experiment a bit, that is the beauty of diy. ALWAYS leave a clear path between driver(s) and port(s)! That's already been mentioned but bears repeating. |
