So I think I want to build some new speakers. Some a bit smaller than the ones I currently have. I would like the following from my design.
Absoulutes 7l enclosure or smaller. I would like 110db max. The -3db point around 60Hz at 1W Would like: 6" drivers or smaller, what ever is best. Smaller the better. Good looks. All on a budget. Everything to be sourced within the UK. So I have been modelling different drivers. I would get the sound I'm after in the right box but far too expensive or not possible to buy the drivers in the UK. Or I could get the drivers in the UK on budget with out the sound I want. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks Boscoe

Hi,
try : kit items - Get great deals on Speaker kits bundles, Multi buys items on eBay.co.uk Shops! Bass driver specs can be found in the shops individual listings for the drivers. A crosscheck with say Wilmslow Audio will show just how good are the prices. rgds, sreten. P.S. optimising the -6dB point, not the -3dB point often works better, as you will have more bass damping and for vented a lower tuning, below which the speaker will easily overload. The SKO130 according to specs (crosscheck these, they do vary with impedance), would work well IMO in 7 to 8 litres tuned to 50 to 55 Hz. FWIW the c/o's provided I would treat as possibly a starting point. http://sites.google.com/site/undefinition/diy (see FAQs) http://www.zaphaudio.com http://www.rjbaudio.com/Audiofiles/FRDtools.html http://www.rjbaudio.com/ http://speakerdesignworks.com/ http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=28655 http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Diy_Lou...r_Projects.htm

I know how to make it all and that just wondering what people would recommend driver wise as I don't seem to be getting any where. I would prefer to go for my own design not someone else's.
Thanks for you time anyway!

Hi,
They are just cheap drivers and crossovers and very good value. I don't suspect for one minute the c/o's are really any good or ideal. Using the FRD tools link I gave you could design a proper crossover if you can find proper manafacturers spec sheets for the drivers. Any other option will be far more expensive in the UK, you did say budget. IPL Acoustics have some drivers, but no proper spec sheets I suspect. UK source of Seas drivers seems to have dried up. rgds, sreten. FWIW a small box with good bass always = low efficiency, and with the current situation regarding home video and subs, its always going to be difficult to find small drivers designed to work much below 80Hz. See : http://zaphaudio.com/5.5test/ also see : http://www.europe-audio.com see SB Acoustics stuff ? And a final FWIW is are you sure you can design speakers better than the people I gave links for ? Many people who insist on their "own" designs, (see Undefinitions FAQs), simply don't know what is actually involved.

Sorry by budget I was thinking about £150 for just drivers Probably a bit more if it's worth it. Down to 80 Hz is fine I plan to build a couple of subs too.
Thanks for your help so far. I can competently design my own. Anyone can get nearly all the datasheets for all the drivers on europe audio, IPL, Wilmslow and any others that I've forgotten!

Hi,
Data sheets are one thing, proper distortion measurements another. Whatever, eurpoeaudio is likely your best bet for quality drivers. As max SPL rapidly decreases as you lower frequency, but is constant in the thermal region, noway are you going to get 107dB at 60Hz. You may be getting nowhere because what you want is not possible. rgds, sreten.
