Default Adding a tall thin woofer cab to bookshelf speaker?

Need some ideas about replacing the speaker stand for my bookshelf speaker and convert my 2-way into a 3-way with a tall thin woofer cab.

1. Max woofer size < 7 inch
2. Around what XO point should I aim for?
3. Should I get 4ohm or 8ohm drivers?
4. Any ideas about the crossovers?

TIA

Without modifying the bookshelf speaker, it's probably best to design the stands as bass modules/subwoofers, crossed over low at about 70hz...wherever the speakers begin to roll off. For maximum flexibility and level matching, it's best to use an active crossover and dedicated amp combo, or a plate amp. Otherwise, the crossover it going to be big, lossy, and full of phase errors at that low frequency.

It would be easiest to go for a simple bass reflex enclosure, as the volume available should allow you to get down to 40-50hz at reasonable output. Transmission line or 3rd order bandpass would be interesting too, although the latter may be difficult to integrate with your main speakers due to the inherent hump at tuning frequency and very steep rolloff. There's plenty of 8" drivers out there intended for bass (as opposed to mid-bass) duty though.
