Haha, so true, but the money situation is even worse when this sort of addiction takes hold in lots of things, including rebuilding classic cars in my case.... I am so poor

When I was younger, I asembled a complete Heathkit sys including their 350w RMS per ch amp.... with JBL L100 speakers, Thorens turntable etc.

I still remember my friends/neighbors, knocking on my door telling me to put down the soldering iron and have a beer.. etc.

Then, due to life situation/events, I had to let my love of good audio fall by the way side. I belive I shed a tear when I move out of the area and sold the sys to a close friend.

Now that I'm retired etc, I got the audio bug again to a certian extent.
Yeah, I can stop at one.......

That tweeter has a recommended xover point of 2KHz & its FR graph looks good frrom there up.

Re:'As for the crossover, I was going to use a Daytion Audio unit' - these are anathema 'round here - off-the-shelf crossovers can only be built to the 'nominal' impedance of the driver, any match to reality is hit & miss; impedance varies with frequency, an accurate crossover uses the actual values of impedances of the drivers at the crossover point...

I understand what you are saying but, I'm afraid that anything other than an off the shelf crossover is over my head at this point so, I guess I'll have to take my chances.

BTW, I may eventually go with a different tweeter

Thanks, you have been a big help so far.

The sys I'm putting together may not be perfect but, at least I will learn something in the process and have a bit of fun doing it. I will even experiment with different enclosure volumes for the TB and even if I want go go sealed or ported.
I do have a ball park idea of what it will need.
Hey, who knows, I may get lucky and it will sound great. It's got to sound better than stock TV sound.

I would use cut-off frequency 4KHz, from my experience (subjective) is always better when one driver cover the region from 20-4000hz.

Why not start out with just a wide band/full range option instead of an off the shelf Xo which really doesn't advance your skills in the hobby? A full ranger will give you the opportunity to understand some primary things such as alignment characteristics and the need for baffle step compensation and notch filters for the rising response or 1st breakup of full range drivers.

Good point -Subjective ! It may be driver dependent ,or project as a whole : we need to know driver placement ,baffle size , and crossover schematics ,which is the core (heart) of a speaker system.
Edip : UP !

GoranB, I tend to agree with that purely from a listener's standpoint.

I have always believed that the midrange is the heart of good audio and it should be as smooth as possible.

As I said, I wiil listen to the 3" drivers on their own before I make any decisions about tweeters.

BTW guys, I just want some decent sound that's better than a TV's stock speakers.
Also this wiil be in an apartment enviormen so, I can't make too much noise so, a really high end sys would be a waste for me right now. I would not be able to really enjoy it.

Yeah, I can turn it down but, what's the point?
It's like having a Porche and be limited to 20 M/K PH. It can be really frustrating.

Anyway My new TV (46" Samsung LCD 120hz) was delivered today and the sound is terrible as expected. What is just as bad is, I ordered a powered sub from Parts Express and a "TB W8-740p" repacement driver for it and guess what?
They delivered the TB today also but, the sub it's going in is back ordered and wont be in until mid May! So, I have a brand new, beautiful "Tang Band W8-740p" driver with no way to utilize it for now and not even any sub to use. That is also frustrating!

AT least the TV itself is working great and it wiil keep me busy for a while as I adjust everthing to my liking.

Also, now that I got the TV set up, I now can now see exactly how I need to design and mount speakers in the particular enviorment.
As it tuns out, I have a bit more room that I originally though I would for them which is great.
