Sure,
I have seen it more than a few times, and always was oppossed to it, but, now it seems it has hit home. Because I have a verticle array, a 4 way system, and my very large ribbon tweeter is somewhat directional, I'd like to keep it close to being at my seated postion ear level, it seems like the only way to do that would be to place the upper-midrange above said tweeter. Is this really okay? For reference, the bass is a 12" cone, the low mid is a 12" cone, the upper mid is a 5" cone, but mounted in a waveguide which makes it physically larger, and the ribbon tweeter is 11" square. In addition to all this, the entire array is lifted off the floor by about 5 inches. Active crosovers L/R 48db/oct. Thanks for sharing any criticms/ ideas/ observations/ experiences. |

This works just fine, I've dont this quite a few times. Be beware that the mid can end up in the exact middle between the floor and ceiling, and this will case a massive suck-out in the frequency response, typical around 250-300 Hz. If this is a problem depends on your XO frequency of course.

Hi StigErik,
Sorry I was a bit rushed when I posted this morning. I want to share a few more details: There will actually be 2) units of a 12" cone per channel for the lower mids, but NOT D 'Appolito style. And you might be delighted in knowing this is a di-pole system for the lower mids/ and upper mids for now. I say "for now" on the upper mid, as I might wish to change to a compression driver/ horn for the upper mid at a later date. And thanks for the tip about mid floor ceiling distance. I made note of that ! It will go like this: Bass/ low mid/ tweeter/ midrange/ low mid The upper most low mid unit might be close to at the "suck out" point; if that's the case, i'll simply move it up higher. Thanks again. And yes, this will be my first di-pole attempt ! ( I hate boxed sound ) Scott L |
