Hi Everyone
I am attempting to rewire some speakers from powered to passive removing the amp from inside and using a phonic external power amp to power them. However iam not sure where to start or if i should bother. from the internal amp there is a black and red wire that go straight to the 15inch woofer parallel from that it goes to a small crossover then the compression Driver. So my questions are: does the woofer need any crossover or filters? also the woofer says it is a 5 ohm and so is the compression driver? i thought most speakers were 4 or 8 ohm would my external amp run the 5 ohm speakers? i have attached some pics of the speaker thanks for your help. |

Why do you want to use an external amp? Are the built in ones no longer working?

Think I'd rebuild the cabinet before anything else. Too-small plastic cabinets don't sound great.
It would appear the woofer has been used without a crossover, but adding one might help the sound, though it'll be a while of experimentation before it's perfect. If your amplifier is 4ohm stable, it'll drive 5ohms happily. If you try to go below the minimum impedance, current draw gets higher than the amp is rated for and it may cook. That will depend on the amplifer - most these days have some kind of protection against abuse. Chris

Thanks for the help guys. Yes the amp isnt working on them. but one of the reasons i was thinking of rewiring them was so that i could use them in parallel with two other 8 ohm speakers then i could just loop in and out of the speakers with my speaker cables rather then messing around with signal cables to the powered speakers. When using two different Ohm speakers what happens to the speakers does one get more power than the other?
My external amp is 1000w per side at 4 ohm and 600w a side at 8ohm i was hoping to use the two together with a total load of 4 ohms and have 500w go to each speaker but then i discovered that the speaker was 5 ohms so not sure what to do now maybe i will just get the amp fixed in them or buy some new speakers Cheers for all your help |
