Default Vitavox S2 x JBL 2435hpl

i received today a pair of JBL 2435hpl. they have the same exit, 1,5" , as the Vitavox S2, which i use for some time in my system. I was curious about them, specially because they use Be diaphragms from Brush Wellman, the same company that makes Truextent diaphragms, wich are acclaimed by some people of sounding very smooth, and improving performance over original diaphragms.
I just replaced them in the mid horn. No crossover adjustment was made. I just replaced the drivers. Crossover is first order, 1khz, only high-pass. No low-pass. initial observations : the JBL has significantly more treble. Compared to the Vitavox, it sounds rather harsh and forward. Tone of the Vitavox is more pleasant, relaxed, softer and more pure, specially in the midrange.

Did you measure them?? You need to see what they are doing on that horn. They are not going to be plug and play without some work.

hi Rob

i agree. First thing to try is probably lowpass it at 10khz, and see what happens.

If you can measure them. They typically have a peak at 2K that needs to be notched out. They do on the JBL Biradials and even on the PT Waveguides they may need a couple of notch filters to get things right. In the 9800 they had 3 notches on the Array Horns they only needed 1 notch to flatten things out. They don't do a simple 6dB per octave EQ you may need a couple of parametric notches.

Have you opened them up or run any imp curves on them?? You should run curves on them. If they are used you may need to replace the ferrofluid in them. We have seen many that had excessive amounts of Ferro in them from being recharged improperly.
