Hello guys , I want to build my own 3 way speakers. I've done some research and on paper I am impressed with the Hiquphon's OW1.
Please give me some advice wich drivers can i use as mid's and low's. For mid's wondering between Focal 7W4411 / Focal 6W4311B / Seas W12CY003 / Seas M15CH002/ Aurum Cantus AC-130F35 ? Am I in the right direction at all or there are better mid's for the OW1's. What subwoofers can I use to complete the speakers and satisfy my love to deep and tight bass Thanks |

I usually start with the woofer selection and work the other way, unless I already own a driver. The sensitivity of the two Seas drivers is a little on the low side at 86 dB, and one looked like it would take some careful x-over work to tame the high end. I didn't look at the others. How much amplifier power do you have, and how hard do you plan to push the speakers? What type x-over do you have in mind?

I'm kind of the person , who are very lazy until they start something. But when i start something I give everything to do it the best way possible. I need a quality setup because music is my passion . So I dicided to take the first step as soon as possible ( the OW1''s cause they are relatively cheap and are very good tweeters) . Once I have those tweeters I wont stop until I finish everything as I want it. As for amplifier I'm aiming in Odyssey Khartago/Stratos(perhaps Stratos because of the extra power).
I love parties so I'll need my speakers to go loud but the sound quality should not be compromise. My room is about 8x7(meters). About the X-overs I haven't started thinkin'g yet( I think I should concentrate on the speakers first ?). I'm new in the speaker building so I definitly don't know a lot of things , but I want to grow and I hope you'll help me |

A 3-way is a rather ambitious project for a beginner. You might do well to copy someone elses design. I can't believe I just said that! I never would, even when I didn't know what I was doing. I like designing my own, and picking my own parts.
Assuming you want to proceed, and can do your own x-over work, which will be critical to achieving your goals, here's my suggestion. You will need a rellatively large speaker. Multiple eights or a ten for the woofer(s) maybe. Getting the sensitivity up to 89 dB or higher would be a good goal. This can be harder to do than it may seem on the surface. First off, the mid and tweeter will need to be atleast 89 dB. There's plenty of tweeters that can do that, but fewer mids, or midbasses. For the mid, you need something in the 89dB to 92 dB range that has very low distortion. A 5.5" driver would be my preference, although a 6.5" could also work. Here's the first one I looked at. Got lucky. It's 90 dB. http://www.parts-express.com/pdf/296-404s.pdf Last edited by kbgl; 5th February 2011 at 05:53 PM. |
